William Friedkin to Direct True Detective?

Things are slowly chugging along here as we possibly get one step closer to some actual season 2 details. Indie Wire had a small sit-down with director William Friedkin at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival where Friedkin is being honored. Among other things, they ended up discussing True Detective:

"“I like this writer very much. I’ve met him, and he’s the real deal as far as I’m concerned. Now, all the new seasons are different so I’m not committed—this new season has nothing to do with the last one. Except for him and his sensibility, which I think is extraordinary.”"

Friedkin has directed The French Connection, The Exorcist, and To Live and Die in L.A, among many others. His sensibilities would mesh very well with True Detective. Friedkin couldn’t say how serious his talk with Pizzolatto was, but things look good from his end.

This is the first potentially serious news we’ve had concerning directors for season 2 so far and it’s a juicy little coincidence that this comes out just a day before the Emmy nominations are set to be announced. As we move further into July, expect news to start slipping out little by little.

Friedkin is obviously not the only director to be approached, but he is the first to say that there have been talks. Everything is slowly coming together even if we’re not privy to most of it just yet.
