Did behind-the-scenes turmoil cost True Detective Emmy votes?

The Emmy Awards were not kind to True Detective and fans of the show have been left scrambling to figure out a reason why. The show had everything going for it but walked away with one Emmy during the live show — something HBO was not counting on.

During production there were rumors that series creator nic Pizzolatto and director Cary Fukunaga had a problem seeing eye-to-eye on the direction of the show and turmoil ensued. It has been noted in the week following the Emmy win for fukunaga that he failed to thank Pizzolatto in his speech — something that might not be a coincidence.
Yahoo! TV critic and analyst Maggie Furlong also noticed the gaffe and connected the dots to suggest that the behind the scenes turmoil may have cost the show Emmy votes along the way.
"The show’s one big winner of the night was Cary Joji Fukunaga, who directed all of Season 1. Fukunaga got a lot of Emmy night buzz, for his looks and his talent, but if you could see past his winning smile and unique braids you’d realize that he didn’t thank creator and collaborator Pizzolatto… and it might not have been an accident. Rumors of intense power struggles and differences in storytelling style have been widely reported. While Pizzolatto denied it all in a recent Hollywood Reporter cover story, Fukunaga declined comment. (They can’t even agree on making a statement or not!)"
It’s hard to say if the gaffe has anything to do with coincidence or not, but it’s entirely possible that the Emmy voters held back from voting for the series thanks to the rumors of turmoil on the set.
