Will True Detective Reference Earlier Seasons?

Right from the start True Detective was confirmed as an anthology series, meaning that each season would tell separate stories. It’s because of that choice that we have new actors coming in, and it’s also why we likely will never see Rust or Marty again. Those stories are finished, and it’s time to move on.

But there’s something to be said for looking back.

Even though season two will have nothing to do with the first and takes place at a different time and in a different setting, it hasn’t been confirmed whether or not it will take place in the same universe. Meaning, if the events of season one will have even taken place in the version of California that our new heroes will inhabit.

It’s an interesting thought, and it leaves open the possibility for references to the past at some point, either in this season or the next. If the events of The Yellow King are a part of True Detective, it’s not totally out of the question for a character to reference them. It’s an exciting possibility and would serve as a great bit of fan service.

Of course, sometimes it’s better if the past stays buried. Season two will prove itself all the stronger if it forgoes any detail of season one. How do you feel it should be handled? Should the events of Rust and Marty stay buried, or would you like a nice subtle reference?
