Should Matthew McConaughey return to True Detective?

This week brought about no actual news about the upcoming season of True Detective but Matthew McConaughey’s name is getting hot once again with Interstellar just weeks away from release.

The actor sat down with GQ recently and noted, among other things, that he fully understood Rust Cohle and that no other detective scripts he had gotten quite lived up to the character he played this past year. This brings up the question of whether or not McConaughey would return to True Detective one more time?

Of course, it’s highly likely that McConaughey was just getting all excited in the Emmy buzz that is building for the show but it has opened up the possibility in the mind of fans that Rust could return and that’s both amazing and dangerous at the same time.

It’s amazing for the obvious reason that McConaughey brought to life one of the single best television characters we’ve ever seen and to have him back would be thrilling to say the least. But while having him back would be great, it’s a dangerous thing to consider as he so perfectly played Rust in season one that to run the risk of possibly tainting that is criminal to even ponder.

Still, seeing Rust return in a limited guest role or a cameo in which he briefly appears but somehow adds tremendous value to the story would be amazing. But if he returns, it would indeed have to be tremendous story value that he brings as anything less would seem like pandering and both the show and it’s fans are far too smart for that.
