The critical success that the show experienced proved to be fruitful for not only Matthew McConaughey but also Fukunaga who has been tapped to direct the big screen adaptation of The Black Count: Glory, Revolution, Betrayal, And The Real Count of Monte Cristo as his jump from HBO to the big screen.

Per Deadline:

"On fire since the success of HBO‘s True Detective this year, director Cary Fukunaga has lined up his next project I’ve learned. Teaming with John Legend and his Get Lifted Film Co. partner Mike Jackson, Fukunaga will adapt and helm a big-screen version of The Black Count: Glory, Revolution, Betrayal, And The Real Count of Monte Cristo for Sony."

Fukunaga’s biggest film to date is Jane Eyre but this new project seems like it will eclipse that in both scope and scale. It’s not a small undertaking but then again neither was True Detective, even if it wasn’t a swashbuckling adventure tale.

It will be interesting to see how the film turns out as it’s clear that his work at HBO has won over Fukunaga some new fans.
