Can True Detective Survive Beyond Nic Pizzolatto?

The second season of the hit HBO series True Detective is eventually going to start production, but the series is under some scrutiny for not getting its act together quick enough for fans desperate for new material.

But with all of this free time our hands, there are questions that fans have been kicking around that will start to become more and more relevant as the series presses on. First and foremost, there is the matter of Nic Pizzolatto and if the show can continue on without him part of the creative team.
No one is asking that Pizzolatto leave the show, but this summer the creator and writer of the series noted that he only sees three seasons of the show airing, which means if fans want more they might be out of luck. But True Detective doesn’t just belong to Pizzolatto anymore, it belongs to HBO. While it’s unlike the network to beat a show to death, there is a possibility that they move on with seasons without Pizzolatto in charge.
We’ve seen shows go on without their creators and the results are mixed. The most recent case of this is Dexter which fell way off after show runners were switched up. That’s the fear with having True Detective on too long, but the fact of the matter is the show isn’t on Pizzolatto’s plate, it belongs to HBO and they can run it as long as they want.
