True Detective Production Needs to be Thought of as a Movie

The second season of the hit HBO series True Detective is right around the corner, but the cameras have yet to roll. What this has done is caused some panic among fans who are wondering what the hold up is on the series getting underway with production. But the long wait that is festering frustration is easily fixed — just think of True Detective as a movie.

Essentially, True Detective is one giant movie that unfolds over eight episodes. That was the case in the first season of the show and it’s likely to be the case in season two. With that being the case, it’s not that hard to see True Detective as taking as long as a movie to produce and film.

It typically takes roughly a year and a half to get a film in the can and out into theaters, which is the timetable that True Detective seems to be on. If the show premieres in the summer, then that will have been a year and a half after the first season premiered. If we’re thinking of True Detective as a film, then this timeline isn’t all that crazy and really shouldn’t be railed against.

That being said, True Detective is a television show and while it’s understandable that the wait for new episodes is going to be long, there is an expectation to get the second season out sooner rather than later.
