True Detective Season 2: Cary Fukunaga is Returning, Kind Of

The second season of the hit HBO series True Detective is right around the corner, and a familiar name will be returning despite rumors of in-fighting on the first season.

HBO knows that they have a hit series with True Detective, but even hit shows are subject to on-set drama. That was the case for the first season of the show, as there were rampant rumors of series creator Nic Pizzolatto and director Cary Fukunaga feuding on the set of the show.

Pizzolatto has since denied this, and the return of Fukunaga to the series for season two is something that seems to further squash whatever beef may or may not have existed.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cary Fukunaga will return for True Detective Season 2, but only as an executive producer.

"Rumors of a power struggle between Pizzolatto and Fukunaga — who directed all eight episodes of the first season and is responsible for the show’s rich cinematic look — have circulated since production got underway in early 2013. And they grew more intense when word got around that Fukunaga would not be back for season two. The director, who declined comment for this article, will remain attached as an executive producer."

The fact that Fukunaga is back should make fans happy, as his creative voice is there. But as we all know, executive producers largely collect checks and offer little insight, through no fault of their own. Pizzicato could have said no to letting Fukunaga back, but he clearly values his input enough to let him continue to be attached to the show.

It also could have been an HBO decision, but no matter what it was, Fukunaga is back for season two and that’s huge for the series.
