Will True Detective Season Three be Able to Attract Major Talent?

Have the reactions to True Detective season two hurt the chances of season three getting a big cast?

True Detective season two was so violently, outrageously disliked that people are still talking about how much they hated it. It struck a serious nerve with critics and the wound hasn’t quite healed, though most have been able to move on to other things. Reputation can be everything, and it would be fair to say that True Detective’s has been shaken.

True Detective has been known for its A-list cast. For season two, part of attracting the talent surely had something to do with the love for season one. Season three will definitely have known stars to attract viewers, but will they be of the same caliber of the first two seasons?

More from HBO

To get big name for season three, Nic Pizzolatto and HBO may have to prove that it won’t be a repeat of season two. It’s possible that many actors out there are now looking at True Detective with a skeptical eye — they’re not sure if True Detective can recover. That’s fair, as many others are also feeling the same way.

Taking extended time off will help heal some of the damage done, but after that it’s on Pizzolatto to deliver something compelling. After season one it felt like True Detective was sitting at the top of the world and could have any actor out there. It doesn’t quite feel that way anymore. In that sense, True Detective has taken a step back and it needs to prove itself again.

There haven’t been serious casting rumors for season three yet. That could be because they just haven’t been casting yet because it is so early, or it could be because they’re having trouble attracting talent. Maybe it’s a mix of both.

Next: Coil Farrell could have worked with Terry Gilliam. Sort of.

When season three finally does get here it will be interesting to see who ends up in the cast, this time more than before.
