True Detective Season Three is Not in Limbo

The details of True Detective season three have likely been ironed-out in secret.

True Detective won’t be back for a while. That much has not actually been said by HBO or anyone else, but considering the rushed situation of season two and the silence that has followed, it has been a safe assumption. That doesn’t meant that the third season is in some sort of limbo or is being purposefully delayed by HBO — it just means they don’t want us to know anything about it yet.

Nic Pizzolatto is still under contract with HBO, and even though we don’t know whether True Detective will be his next project or not, it’s likely that he and HBO have been discussing season three. At this point it feels as if HBO won’t announce season three until all of the details have been decided upon and they have concrete information to share.

More from HBO

Last time around HBO rode the True Detective hype-train and wanted to get season two out there as quickly as possible. Nic Pizzolatto was also keen on talking about season two, which at that point had a somewhat different plot with more occult overtones. The total silence that we’re experiencing now is part of an effort to slow everything down.

It wouldn’t be out of the question for HBO to announce everything at once; the cast, the plot, and the premiere date. That was how most of the world first heard of True Detective’s first season, and the brand could use a reboot of sorts.

Next: This week in True Detetive: Term Life edition.

Still, it’s impossible to keep details completely under-wraps. At some point someone is going to slip up and perhaps say something they shouldn’t have. The fate of True Detective season three is currently a secrete to everyone not intimately involved with the situation, and to say that it’s in limbo isn’t accurate.  It’s just hibernating.
