The second season of True Detective had a high number of leaks, but will season three continue that trend?
After the first season of True Detective ended, the series became something of a phenomenon. That doesn’t need to be re-tread here, but it is important to keep in mind why the media was so hungry for leaks for True Detective season two. For a show that is so obsessed with secrecy, season two had an impressive number of leaks.
Those leaked plot details and paparazzi shots — they’re how we knew Ray would eventually ditch his mustache. There has been nothing of substance to report about season three so far, which is normal for a season of television that may not actually be in production just yet. What we do know is that Nic Pizzolatto’s guarded nature led to press being banned from the set of season two.
Secrecy, however, rarely gets in the way of leaks. If viewers and the media want a scoop, they will probably get it. It is almost impossible in today’s world to have a major production be completely leak-proof, though on-set paparazzi photos may not fall into everyone’s definition of leak. Those are usually the best-case scenarios for everyone involved.
The question about True Detective season three is whether or not there will be enough interest to warrant the amount of scrutiny to produce said leaks. Nic Pizzolatto can only go so far on his end. It’s safe to say that as long as True Detective stars A-list actors, there will always be interest in on-set photos, at the very least.
It will be interesting to gauge said interest once season three actually gets going, and then compare it to season two. True Detective is coming off, in most people’s opinions, a less-than stellar season. Some fans might not even return for season three, and therefore general interest could be less.
We’ll know where True Detective season three stands once that first photo leak comes out. There is always at least one.
